Time is Running!!!

I always wonder whether the time is running or we (the humans) run the time. Technically, we invented the time and decided how many hours, how many minutes and how many seconds per minute a clock should have. Again, we are the ones who worry that the time is running and we have no time. Have you ever gave it a thought?

Most of us feel that time is running fast when we have so many things to do and time is running slow when we have nothing to do. Why does it happen? Have you ever experienced these thoughts? What would you say if I say that it is something related to economics.

Yes, the more time you want the scarce it becomes. It is basically a demand and supply function of time. The only thing here is we cannot alter the supply of time like we do for all other things. Because time is always limited with respect to our life span. However, we can alter the demand as it is related to adjusting our own works and preferences and managing the time wisely. How could you alter the demand then?

Time management is a subject which everyone likes to learn and many people are experts in it. But, most of them don’t know how to apply it in real life. While reading, it seems easy and when it comes to its application, we struggle because it takes a lot of discipline and control to do that. And, we, humans are full of emotions that sometimes dominate our aim to control ourselves in doing some things. Decision making is one more important aspect in time management. Likewise, there are many other qualities one has to develop to manage the time well.

But, how can we develop them? Is it really important that we should manage time? Or are you happy by being letting yourself go with whatever happens in your life? Whoever you are, at some point, you will regret the things that you have not done when you have the time to do them. The only solution to this issue is to reduce the number of regrets as it is well known that it is impossible to have no regrets in one’s life. May be at the end, many of us might feel that everything happens for a reason – the so called optimistic people, but we should not forget that we have the ability to change the reasons.

Particularly in the current digital era, we are running out of time faster than ever. Despite the statistics and surveys that say that the current generation is wasting most of their productive time on internet, many of them are turning it into a productive by showcasing their talents on social media. So, it is not right to say that digital platforms are bad for time management but we should all think about the amount of time we are spending on them. Again, it varies from person to person. If you are someone whose livelihood is based on a digital platform, it’s completely fine if you spend all your time on it. But, if you are someone who doesn’t have anything related to digital platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Netflix, you are really wasting your time. No one mentions it but they are actually very addictive. Hence, one should reflect on how important they are to them, how closer they are with one’s goals in life and how much time is worth spending on them.

There is a very simple technique to manage time more wisely i.e., prioritising things. Identify your goals. Write them down on a paper. You can also use an excel but trust me, writing down works out better. Write what have you done yesterday from morning to evening. If you want it to be more precise, write your daily schedules for the past one week. Then, calculate the time you spent on the productive activities and unproductive activities. Here, productive activities are the one which takes you closer to your goal and unproductive ones creates a distance from what you want to achieve. After listing the productive an unproductive activities, identify how they are associated with your daily habits. Find strategies to reduce the unproductive ones. We cannot reduce all of them at a time but start with one and pass on to the other. Check your progress everyday.

If you are using instagram more often and want to reduce your screen time, just set the screen time limit and be in control. At some point, you might want to change the screen time because you want more. Remember that if you can control the urge for 5 minutes by distracting yourself to other activities, you won’t do it in the coming 1 hour. It always depends on how strong your determination is. It works the same for all other unproductive habits.

There are many books in the market regarding time management and how to be productive but trust me, writing down things on a paper in a clear way really makes a difference. Just try it. In order to do it without quitting, remember that you never know what happens in the next minute. Always try to make use of the time you have. Enjoy the pride of accomplishing a task. It’s rare and the most peaceful feeling in the world. If you want to write a paper, write it. If you want to call a friend, call him. If you want to visit a city, just do it. Only thing that matters here is your happiness and satisfaction. Be honest to your inner self. Everyone of us always know what we are doing but we are so reluctant to tell ourselves the truth. Every time we find excuses for not doing something that we want to do. If you really want to do it, you will do it at any cost. And, don’t forget to write down after doing something you want to do because it will be the happiest moment for you on that day. Finally, never forget that the time is running!!

Perks of doing a research

Research is something which is inherent in our daily lives. Everyday when we wake up, our mind starts searching for something. It may be food, book or some sort of motivation. As soon as our day starts, everyone of us keep searching something we want till we sleep. But, it’s just that we don’t realise that we are doing research. Precisely speaking, our whole life is a big research project after all.

That’s why I love research. It is not just a scientist’s ability or skill but it is everyone’s daily duty. When we do research in our daily lives, we hardly think about the process and results. When a scientist do research, he already knows what he wants to prove. He has framed hypothesis which he tests by experimenting, surveying or reviewing. Finally, after a long struggle with research papers, newspaper articles, magazines, stakeholder opinion considerations and analysis of his own perceptions, he will come to a conclusion.

Even after he arrived at a conclusion, he needs to compare it with other researcher’s results. In this world, everything and everyone is connected which restricts an individual to state that his research result is true. Here emerges the need to compare one’s result with others. If the result doesn’t match, a scientist always review his whole process again to check whether he has done a mistake at any point. Then he publishes the paper. Some readers accept his conclusions and some don’t. As the time passes, the conditions which the researcher considered while he is writing the paper doesn’t exist anymore. There is a high probability that any research could be proved wrong at any point of time. Then, what is the use of doing research?

A human being’s life is uncertain and unpredictable. Due to this, our mind always tends to think of short term goals which would make our lives better each day but it doesn’t think of the long term outcomes that would emerge because of the current day research. For the very same reason, our food habits are not as healthy as our previous generations.

Green revolution, which was implemented to save the world from famine has now started exposing its repercussions. At that point of time in history, our main target is to have enough food for everyone and no one should die of hunger. It’s completely legitimate at that point. However, now researchers are questioning the same green revolution about its impact on environment and resources. Scientists are trying to find ways to change the consequences of green revolution. Therefore, a research which is very much praised for its innumerable benefits to mankind has now become an irresolvable problem.

Likewise, even in our lives, we try to find answers for our inner questions. We try to search for things which keeps us wealthy and happy. However, one must understand that the things which we find today or the answers which we get today are not permanent. They change with time. The things which have value today may not be valued in the same way in the future. The answers which we found to our questions may not be true at some point of time.

Whether it is a research done by us or by a scientist, it is not long-lasting. Whatever we do today is definitely an achievement but we shouldn’t stop at that point. As the world changes with time, we must keep an eye on the aftermaths of our achievements. One must reflect in his own mind about the things he has done and the things he is going to do. It doesn’t matter what we did or thought but it matters how we changed ourselves and our thoughts according to the world.

For that reason, be dynamic and keep changing yourself. Always believe in the results of your findings because they are completely true at that point of time from your point of view. You will be proved wrong anyway at some point of life. Then, don’t let yourself down for what you did. Try to uncover what has gone wrong and accordingly change your result. Remember that you are the creator of your result and you have the right and responsibility to modify it. Question your own research before others do. Remain truthful to yourself. Try to adapt to situations but don’t surrender to them.

This is applicable to all those researchers who has a thirst to do something in their lives.

Two faces of the world

In September this year, I attended a summer school on Sustainable Management in Brussels, Belgium. It is the capital of Belgium where the European parliament is located and all crucial decisions related to Europe and sometimes to the whole world are decided by a few delegates sitting in the middle of this city. It is regarded as one of the most expensive regions of Europe with many tourist destinations, grand hotels, educational and research institutions, big buildings and modernized streets.

However, this is one side of the picture. On the other side, you can see people sleeping on roads, eating food from trash and begging for money. On every morning, I used to start at 7 am from my hotel and walk for an hour to reach the university. On my way, I found people in a very pathetic condition. Most of them are refugees who fled their country in search of good life and freedom from poverty. But even after their migration, their living conditions didn’t change.

As I walked through the metropolitan streets, I can feel the pollution and coldness of development everywhere. Everyone is busy in their own lives without caring about what is happening around them. One can hear nothing but the sounds of cars and trucks on the roads. At some places, there are renovations going on for the old historical buildings. At the same time, there are new buildings coming up in places which otherwise are home for large trees. I never took a transport because the bus stops and metro lines are very confusing. The tram and metro stations are always full of people and the ticket price is quite expensive. For a normal student who is dependant on scholarship like me, the transport seemed a luxury but not a need. So, I used to walk 2 hours a day from my hotel to the campus.

The hotel in which I lived is a female dormitory which is a bit cheap as compared to many other hotels in the city but is very comfortable in terms of the rooms and services. It was a four bed female dormitory with a private bathroom and wifi. The staff used to clean everyday and they are ready whenever I want a task to be done. The hotel choice was the only thing I felt proud of in the city.

On the first day, I felt so hungry in the evening and I searched for an Indian restaurant near by because I desperately felt like eating rice. Following google, I entered into a hotel but it was unfortunately Pakistani but not Indian as shown in the google. I felt even google can’t work accurately in such places. Once I was inside the restaurant, a man came and asked me what I want. Then he went back and came again with a plate of Biryani. He didn’t went back this time and started asking me about my details, my country and my city. I hesitantly told him the wrong details because I don’t want to share my personals with strangers and at the same time I can’t deny speaking with new people as I am always interested in things people say. After eating, I started back to my hotel and its almost becoming dark. While I was walking, there were people who seemed weird as they are watching me from top to down as I was passing by. I don’t know what is their intention but I surely know that it was something which I hate. So, I tried walking fast and as I walked, I saw more and more people like that and most of them were refugees. There was a strange feeling in my stomach that it was a dangerous place. I hurried up to my hotel and once I reached, I determined that I should never go back to that street again.

From that incident, I used to walk straight up to the campus and return directly to the hotel without taking any diversions. Five days passed by and I made some new friends with whom I used to do my lunch and did group work as a team. We presented it the last day and before leaving, we all had a party and group photoshoot. Farewells always come with beautiful memories. Although I didn’t had a good time in the city, I am happy that I at least experienced it. At the end, life is all about experiences anyway.

My visit to this big city did not go as expected but I learned and experienced how it would feel like when you live in a metropolitan city. On one side, you will have all the opportunities to grow and develop but on the other side, you will have much more competition to succeed and survive amid the fast paced environment. On one side, you can enjoy your life by living in skyscrapers and going to fancy restaurants but on the other side, you need to struggle in the traffic and feel uncomfortable with people staring at you. On one side, you will have all the luxuries but on the other side, you can’t even see a tree to sit below it and breath.

The world has come so far in terms of peace and development but it remained at the same place since ages in eradicating poverty and removing inequalities. They are present in each and every country. Interestingly, the inequality is more in developed countries and cities compared to developing ones. Human race is struggling to survive even though we have advanced very much in terms of technology and artificial intelligence. It is evident that this situation can’t be changed but at least we must try to reduce its impact. Instead of building houses on the Mars, I suggest to build shelters for those who don’t have them on the Earth. The two faces of the world is unalterable but the gap between the two faces can be adjustable. The magnitude of change depends on the decisions we make considering both capitalism and humanity.

Is the Israel-Palestine violence calling for a lift in peacebuilding?

If I ask you, ‘How is your life?’ , What would you say?

‘It’s super busy. I need to manage my office and family. A bit stressed with being working online all the time and the spread of pandemic but I am happy as I am earning and spending time with my family’.

If this is what you say,

Just stop a while, come out of your world and imagine if you are born in the eastern Mediterranean region which survived the violence for the past one week.

Many people had died and a lot were injured. Among them, there were 31 children who doesn’t have anything to do with the conflict which is on ground since years.

Here is a heartbreaking statement given by a 10 year old girl – ‘I am sick. I want to do something for the people. I wish I am a doctor. But I can’t. I am just 10 years old. I don’t know what to do. How can I fix all these? I am helpless. Why do we deserve this? What did I do? What did all the children here do? Please send a missile and kill all of us.’

Who can answer the questions of this girl and what can bring back the things she lost. It’s not only her question, but the question of every child in the region.

On one side, the world is fighting against a virus. On the other side, people are fighting to save themselves from their fellow human beings. This is a clear depiction of who is more dangerous on this planet.

Today, the sufferers are the people of Palestine and Israel. Tomorrow, it will be you. It is a fact that the greatest destruction happened during the world wars I and II, which initially started as a small war between two nations. And, the same incident is happening right now.

What if we have to face that destruction again? If someone is suffering in this world, no one can live happily. It’s the responsibility of every individual to act and bring down the violence.

How to act on violence?

Human behavior and attitude is the most difficult thing to change. Unfortunately, one needs to do the same thing to solve the problem.

Education is a powerful tool which can be used by anyone to bring about the desired reforms. A unique strategy to reduce the violence through non-violence is through ‘Building peace in the minds and hearts of people’.

One needs to ‘Perceive, propagate and promote peace.’

International organizations like UN have already started a peace building mission which aimed to sustain peace in the world. However, it will only succeed if all of us join our hands and put our efforts to make the mission fruitful.

What exactly is peace building?

Peace building is a step-wise process which involves

  • Knowing the reasons for emergence of a conflict.
  • Motivating and supporting societies to manage their differences through agreements.
  • Resolving the problem without any violence

It can be done through institutions or people through collaborating at local, regional, national and international levels. The only thing is one needs to understand the importance of a happy life and brutality of violence.

No one is too small to make a change. Don’t wait till the ball comes to you. Step ahead and hit the ball before it hits you. Prevention is far better than cure. Stop the violence before it starts and destroy it’s roots. This is what peace building does.

If this strategy had reached at every corner of this planet, the violence that is happening today would not have happened. The people in the eastern Mediterranean region would have been enjoying their lives peacefully like every other happy person.

But why that didn’t happen?

Are we already late in peace building? If so, what should we do now?
